What I Am Reading Now: Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

I’m about 1/3 of the way through Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage and I don’t know what is going to happen, no clue how it will page out. This book is super creepy! You know by now that I love a good page turner and this one definitely has me hooked. Its borderline horror with a little girl that is an absolute nightmare.

Hanna isn’t like other little girls. She’s in first grade and doesn’t speak a word unless her father isn’t around and then she speaks to her mother Suzette, usually something very threatening and scary.

In front of her beloved father, she’s delightful but once his back is turned she is an evil child who cuts Suzette’s hair while she sleeps, removes her mother’s medicine and refills capsules with flour, speaks in perfect French in the personality of a dead witch from the 17th century. And more…

I feel so bad for poor Suzette who suffers from Crohn’s disease and also carries with her the emotional abuse of her mother. She wants to bond with Hanna and do her best as a mother but having such a demonic child isn’t easy. She fears Hanna might even kill her.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book like this!

Here’s the official synopsis:

Afflicted with a chronic debilitating condition, Suzette Jensen knew having children would wreak havoc on her already fragile body. Nevertheless, she brought Hanna into the world, pleased and proud to start a family with her husband Alex. Estranged from her own mother, Suzette is determined to raise her beautiful daughter with the love, care, and support she was denied.

But Hanna proves to be a difficult child. Now seven-years-old, she has yet to utter a word, despite being able to read and write. Defiant and anti-social, she refuses to behave in kindergarten classes, forcing Suzette to homeschool her. Resentful of her mother’s rules and attentions, Hanna lashes out in anger, becoming more aggressive every day. The only time Hanna is truly happy is when she’s with her father. To Alex, she’s willful and precocious but otherwise the perfect little girl, doing what she’s told.

Suzette knows her clever and manipulative daughter doesn’t love her. She can see the hatred and jealousy in her eyes. And as Hanna’s subtle acts of cruelty threaten to tear her and Alex apart, Suzette fears her very life may be in grave danger…

I was reading the reviews on Goodreads and it seems people either love it or hate this book. I am definitely intrigued and am curious how the story will wrap up. There are a few thoughts floating in mind about what could happen, I am looking forward to finishing this up today.  Have you read this one? What did you think?
